• What is Chiropractic?
The chiropractic adjustment is a non-invasive procedure performed
by a Doctor of Chiropractic. The patient may be required to lie down
on a chiropractic adjusting bench and be positioned in a certain way.
• Are chiropractors real doctors?
Yes, they are. A Doctor of Chiropractic (DC) does not prescribe medication. Instead, the way in which these doctors treat illness and injury is more natural and mechanical in its approach. Their education process, however, is similar in many ways to that of a Medical Doctor (MD). To practice his/her profession, a Doctor of Chiropractic must fulfill all the academic curricula and successfully complete a rigorous national and state licensing process.
• What type of health conditions are treated by a Doctor of Chiropractic?
Among the most common conditions treated by a Doctor of Chiropractic are back pain, neck pain, headaches, sciatica, automobile accident injuries, and sport injuries. In general, chiropractors can help with a variety of neuromusculoskeletal conditions. Healthy people may also receive treatment from a chiropractor. Many professional athletes like being treated by a chiropractor because they feel and perform better following a chiropractic adjustment.
• What is a chiropractic adjustment?
The chiropractic adjustment is a manipulation of a joint (commonly a spine joint) to restore proper mechanics. A chiropractic adjustment may help in correcting misalignment, increasing range of motion, and decreasing pain by removing nerve pressure and irritation.
• How long does a chiropractic adjustment take?
A chiropractic adjustment can literally take seconds to perform. Some chiropractic techniques may take a little longer time. Frequently, other therapies like mechanical traction, electrical muscle stimulation, therapeutic ultrasound, and heat or ice therapy may accompany the chiropractic adjustment, causing your chiropractic visit to last anywhere between 20 minutes to one hour.
• Does the chiropractic adjustment hurt?
For most people, the adjustment is a NON-TRAUMATIC event (that is, not painful). Many people will find it relaxing and may experience relief of some symptoms right away. Few people may report light musculoskeletal discomfort following the adjustment. If this happens, it usually goes away within one day.
• Do I have to be a chiropractic patient for a long time?
You can be a chiropractic patient for as long as you want to. Some people feel so good with chiropractic care that they make it part of their lifestyles. We can relate chiropractic treatment to exercise and nutrition in that they help us to be healthy and feel better. It makes sense to us that exercising permanently and consistently is part of a healthy lifestyle, instead of exercising one or two months throughout a year. If you know that good nutrition habits will make you healthier and feel better, why would you do it just for a short amount of time and then go back to poor nutrition?
Chiropractic can make you feel better. If there is a health issue or if you have an injury, your doctor may prescribe a more intensive plan of treatment at first. Then, as your condition improves, your treatment can be modified, and treatment sessions can be spaced out.
There is no harm in trying chiropractic care on a consistent basis. If it feels good, you may choose to make it part of your lifestyle.
• What is that “popping sound” produced by the adjustment?
It is called cavitation. It is produced by gas and fluid released within a joint when one osseous structure moves over another one. Sometimes you may not hear that sound.
• How common is lower back pain?
It is extremely common. 80% of people (8 out of 10 people) will experience at least one episode of lower back pain in their lives. Lower back pain is both one of the leading reasons why people miss work and why people go to see a doctor.
• How many vertebrae do we have?
As adults, we usually have 24 mobile vertebral segments, one sacral bone, and one coccygeal bone. We used to have more vertebrae when we were children; the sacral bone used to be 5 separate vertebrae and the coccygeal bone used to be 3-4 tiny, separate vertebrae. Normal anatomical variants are frequent.
